Can startups help solve the Financial inclusion issue in India?

India has a long way to go before it can call itself financially inclusive. Even for basic financial needs like a loan, insurance or better investment opportunities (than gold), the poor (technically middle-class – the cooks, drivers, vegetable sellers etc.) don’t have access like the rich.

One of the primary reasons they don’t have this access to financial products is because the quantum that they typically need is of low-value, ranging from say few hundred to just few thousand rupees. This 3MinuteStory is on a fin-tech startup – Setu – that tackles this problem head on.

The story structure emerged mostly as a interviewed Sahil, the founder, on a Monday morning in Bangalore. I interviewed not just on-camera but off-camera as well (a lot). In fact, before I added visuals, I created a blank cut with just interviews, music, gaps and my voice-over (given the technical nature of the problem and solution been explained). It took a bit of iterations to add the visual layer, relying mostly on shots of the Setu team working on their laptops and having discussions with each other (some arranged just so that I could get video footage :P). When I was editing this story, some of my earlier footage from a village came in handy too. There were parts where I thought an animation could bring out the concept better and so I went for it. Setu’s design team helped me refine the animation quality once we had the almost final cut. And for some parts, I just licensed stock footage!

This video-story was commissioned by Setu. You can write to me at amrit.vatsa@gmail.com or amrit@3minutestories.com to commission me to make similar video-stories.

How Indian farmers are finally making profit!

Some basic changes in the approach to farming, is showing dramatic improvements in profitability for thousands of farmers in India. This is that story. I was commissioned by a startup – Bharat Agri, (from IITM juniors) to make it. Hope you like the 3MS.

The folks at Bharat Agri have been doing great work since quite some time, but were struggling to put together a good video that conveyed what they did. A video makes it easier for their sales team to start dialogues with more farmers.

“What is that you don’t like about the videos that you already have”? I ask Sai, the co-founder as we drive to a village to attend a farmers meet. “The audio sucks”, I am explained.

🙂 I hope the audio doesn’t suck in my video. Let me know? Btw, you can also watch the behind the scenes video of how I went about making this 3MS (if that is something you like to watch).

Watch these mothers change India’s reading culture! Brilliant!

Getting children to love reading books (not talking about textbooks here) in this digital age is difficult. But it’s important. Devaki started solving this problem for her own children few years ago, and today manages a network of 60 mothers, spread across the country, who have been trained (by her) to use the power of storytelling and other activities to lure children to get hooked to reading books! And it’s working! This is that story. This is LRN‘s story.

PS: I was commissioned to shoot this story!

PS: Here’s a link to others stories that I have done, around education.

How to choose the right career for you?

This is the story of how a 7 year old startup is changing the way students decide to choose their careers. Although I was commissioned to make this story, believe me when I say this – had I access to something like this when I was growing up, I would have made better career choices in life! 🙂 Share it with especially those in class IX to XII.

Speech impairment doesn’t mean they’ve nothing to say!

Millions of children in India suffer from speech impairment, resulting from various conditions such as autism, cerebral palsy, down syndrome etc. But there are only a handful of speech therapists in India that can help these children (unlike say USA). A bunch of Indian geeks are finally using technology to address the problem and it’s beautiful to see the impact – how when you give the tools to communicate to these children, they can express a lot!

How does one use drones to help India grow faster?

Last year I travelled to Bangalore to meet Mughilan and Mrinal, the co-founders of Skylark drone. This is their story – and how they are able to use drones to contribute to India’s growth. Pretty interesting!

Mughilan and Mrinal show me the garage where they started up. Bangalore, 2016.

This is a commissioned assignment (meaning I got paid to create this 3MS). Generally when startups approach me, they just care about a ‘video’ that can show others, what they ‘do‘. ‘We do this and we do that and we also do this and we also do that’ is what I ususally hear. Unfortunately, unless what someone does is mind-blowingly never seen before cool, the world doesn’t much care (at least not enough to watch a video). So how does one make the world care about what you do anyway? By telling a story. And that’s what I do. A story is always more about what one ‘wants‘ and why one wants whatever one wants. And only then does a story move to what one ‘does’ to get what (s)he wants.

Thankfully, I could spend few days in Bangalore with these guys (as I shot another story in the same premise where they were based at, at that point of time). And that helped me understand their journey and thus appreciate what they were truly doing. Hope you like it!

These IITians are solving a problem that every school faces! Worth sharing!

Amrutash, my batch mate from IIT Madras, left his lucrative job to start a library business which failed to get the desired readership. Naresh, also my batch-mate (we shared the same hostel and wing even) joined theater after IIT, but realized he could not make enough money from that.

It is amazing to see how today, both Amrutash & Naresh have joined hands to create a successful business that is solving a problem almost every school faces.

This 3MS is their story and what they do and how schools are loving them.
